It is not easy to deal with noise nuisances. This is true whether you simply want to decrease sound from travelling too freely from one room to another, or if you want to ‘completely’ seal off a room to use it as a music studio in the depth of the night. Often a pack of ‘sound insulating rockwool’ is applied abundantly, or perhaps black egg carton foam is stuck to the door. For proper results, however, a deeper understanding of the principles involved is useful, and the right application of them is crucial.

Depending on the budget, solutions range from decreasing the air flow between rooms to completely decoupling one room from another. Some natural materials have excellent sound-insulating properties, while still keeping good air quality inside the room.

Studio standards can be achieved by building a wooden structure in your room (garage, etc.), providing sufficient insulation (e.g. cork, woodfiber...), creating sufficient density and mass on the walls (e.g. loam, drywall..), and adding special sound-absorbing panels (woollen felt, if natural) to improve the quality of sound in the room.
